What is MANRRS?
Sunday, March 15, 2020 | Author: Natalie Boyd, Texas FFA News Staff

MANRRS is an organization that is increasing opportunities for minorities looking to engage in fields involving agriculture and related science careers.

Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Science, (MANRRS), is a national organization that invites people of all ethnic and racial backgrounds to participate in open membership. Since 1985, an endless number of doors have been opened to students focusing on careers in ag science related fields.

The MANRRS President of the Prairie View A&M University chapter, Kira Christian, is just one example of the opportunities given to members. Christian has received a countless number of scholarships through her involvement with her chapter and has gained experiences she would otherwise not have had if she wasn’t heavily involved with MANRRS.

“Last month, I was able to attend the AFA Food Institute in Chicago where I was able to gain firsthand insight on the world of Food Science. The institute also assisted with confirming that Food Science is what I’d like my career focus to be,” said Christian.

The organization not only provides an abundance of opportunities, they provide practical skills that can be vital to one’s success.

“MANRRS assists with vital skills such as: leadership, public speaking and networking, just to name a few,” said Christian.

The MANRRS advisor at PVAMU, Horace Hodge, plays a key role in ensuring those vital skills are utilized among its members.

“I have had the opportunity to place more than 1,000 students in internships and permanent jobs with USDA as a result of my affiliation with MANRRS,” said Hodge. “Its’ nurturing and mentoring environment is effective in developing the next generation of leaders in agriculture and related fields.”

When asked how MANRRS is different in comparison to other agricultural related organizations, he answered, “It’s simple. I believe that MANRRS does an excellent job in providing an environment of inclusion and partnership that allows its members to network with a wide group of experienced professionals in a way that is inviting.”
