Texas FFA Rodeo Reigns in Fifteen Years
Wednesday, July 13, 2016 | Author: Marissa Macha, East Bernard FFA

This year’s fifteenth annual Texas FFA rodeo provided a chance for members from all over the state to participate in traditional rodeo events. This two-day competition was held in Mesquite, Texas in conjunction with the 88th Annual Texas FFA Convention.

The FFA rodeo offers a slightly different experience than other rodeos.

“For the most part they’re very similar… however, the number of people I’m competing against are greater than what I’m used to,” barrel racer and East Bernard member, Baylee Jankowski said. “I normally compete against anywhere from 12 to 30 people. This is closer to 80 or 90.”

Jankowski has participated in rodeo events at various places for as long as she can remember and her passion has not wavered.

“I’ve done this practically my whole life, but I’ve been competing and really dedicated these past two years,” Jankowski said. “I love the competition that rodeo presents and that you are the one in control of your performance.”

East Bernard member, Logan Baird repeated his 2015 success when he was named this year’s steer wrestling champion. Baird also was awarded the customary $1,000 scholarship that all winners receive.

“Now that I’ve won the rodeo for two years in a row, the pressure is on,” Baird said. “Everyone is going to be expecting me to do the same next year.”

Baird exhibited his passion for various rodeo events as he also made the finals in team roping.

“You can be the greatest athlete in the world, but if you don’t put in the time to train and learn to work as one with your horse, you’re not going anywhere,” Baird said.
