Remembering Johnny Callen and His FLS Project
Saturday, April 15, 2017 | Author: Shannon O'Quinn, Texas FFA News Staff

To many people across Texas, Johnny Callan was more than just another FFA member. Johnny was their friend, but most of all someone poised to make a difference in the world around him.

“Johnny was branded as far as FFA was concerned,” said Jacksboro FFA advisor, Loren Sell.  “Everything he did revolved around not only FFA, but a way to help other students.”

During his time as a Jacksboro FFA member, Johnny showed goats, served as chapter president, and was chosen to serve as a Texas FFA Ford Leadership Scholar.

“Johnny was one of the most inspirational people I have ever met,” said Jacksboro FFA officer, Kamlynn Thomas. “He was so passionate about everything he did and always wanted to help share his passions and talents with everyone.”

One of Johnny’s passions was his project for the Texas FFA Ford Leadership Scholars program. He knew he wanted to do something that would benefit the people around him in a big way, so he chose to build a fishing pier at a lake in Jacksboro.

Johnny was determined to have his pier done by the 2017 Texas FFA Ford Scholars banquet held this past January. When he passed, his town came together to see that dream through.

“The community came out of the woodwork to help finish,” Sell said. “Johnny mentioned that at the grand opening he wanted fireworks, so we had a fireworks show that would put the Fourth of July to shame.”

Sell said everyone that had the opportunity to meet him knew that there was something special and unique about Johnny. He had an ability to persevere difficult times and come out even better than before.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him,” Sell said. “He should be here with us.”
