New Charters Bring New Opportunities

Behind the hype of convention lies the backbone of the Texas FFA–the chapters. This year, ten chapters were awarded a permanent place in the association’s history with new charters.

“We definitely want to get more kids in our school involved with our chapter since it is brand new,” Tatum Miller of Forsan FFA said. “[Convention] is a good way to get more people involved in the program.”

Along with Forsan, nine other chapters were given permanent charters including Bel Air, Frisco Memorial, Lake Creek, Lakeview, Morgan, Premont, Still Creek, Stuart and Weiss.

In order to receive a permanent charter, chapters must meet all requirements established by the Texas FFA Association. Steps include developing a Program of Activities (POA), electing chapter officers and requesting a temporary charter.

“This is our second [convention]. Last year we received a [temporary charter] because we didn’t quite complete the process,” Kimberly Ogle of Forsan FFA said. “This year we had a better understanding and we got it finished.”

Members of the new chapters received their official welcome during the opening session of the 2019 Texas FFA Convention and strive to make their chapter members more involved and aware.

“Our school has an academic fair where all of the clubs in our school get together in the cafeteria,” Amy Jerry of Lake Creek FFA said. “We’re constantly using the keynote speakers’ quotes and we hand out fliers.”

With their new charters in hand, these new chapters now have the chance to truly illuminate.
