Programs allowing agricultural science students to pursue Certified Veterinary Assistant certificates are rapidly growing in popularity throughout Texas.

Leander FFA began the CVA program three years ago. Emily Veraa, CVA program coordinator and Leander FFA advisor said, “We noticed the students had a large interest in the veterinary field and the industry has a need for highly motivated individuals with a desire to learn.”

With this program, students learn about veterinary medicine through a two-year course. In the first year, students are in the classroom learning about safety procedures, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Second-year students are placed in veterinary clinics and put what they have learned into practice.

“My favorite part about being in Vet Med Applications class is that I get to experience hands on activities that will prepare me for CVA rotations next year,” said Erin Arias, first year CVA student.

During their veterinary clinic placement, students work with large and small animals, observe surgeries, help with treatments, prepare labs, and assist with procedures.

“The program allows our students to have a chance to earn an industry certification that can assist them in finding a job after graduation” said Veraa. “There are approximately around 1200 Level 1 Certified Veterinary Assistants in the state of Texas, this program allows the industry to grow with skilled and motivated students.”

Leander FFA often hosts veterinarians from the community at chapter meetings and in the classroom to speak about their profession and promote the program, encouraging students to seek a certification allowing them to enter the workforce after graduation.

“Being part of the practicum in veterinary medicine program allows me to take my dream of working with animals and turn it into reality,” said Trinity Vasquez, a second year CVA student. “Since working at a clinic, I have learned and been exposed to so many things. I am so grateful for being able to gain experience which I will need for my certification test as well as for my career.”
