Members Advocate for Ag Education at the State Capitol

For two days, the Texas State Capitol became a classroom as more than 800 Texas FFA members attended the eighth annual Agricultural Education and Texas FFA Day at the Capitol. On February 21 and 23 students traveled to Austin, Texas to learn about the state’s legislation process, especially as it relates to agriculture.

Throughout the day members met with their state legislators, walked the Capitol hallways, and witnessed where history has been made since 1889. The event also provided a unique opportunity for students to enjoy keynote speeches from Representative DeWayne Burns, Representative Trent Ashby and Senator Lois Kolkhorst.

“[Day at the Capitol] is a great way to show students how we can take what we learn in the classroom and put it to use,” said Waxahachie FFA advisor, Jeanette Middleton. “The opportunity also provides students the chance to meet with local and state representatives to discuss the importance of ag education.”

The blue corduroy jacket served as a conversation starter for many FFA members as representatives and visitors asked the significance of the official dress item. Kelsey Duke, Waxahachie FFA member, used her jacket as a tool.

“When you are wearing the blue corduroy jacket, people’s interests are sparked and great conversations arise,” Duke said. “This gives us a chance to speak to people that may not know a lot about our industry and the impact it has on all of our lives.”

Since 2010, Texas FFA members have gathered for Day at the Capitol to celebrate the organization and advocate for the continued support of agricultural education.

“It is important for Texas FFA members to advocate for agriculture education because we demonstrate the incredible leadership skills that are acquired through our organization,” said Liberty Hill FFA member, Rett Lee.
