Living to Serve During in the Holiday Season
Thursday, December 15, 2016 | Author: Rachel Knight, Texas FFA News Staff

The holiday season is a time to embrace goodwill toward others, and for Weimar FFA it embraces many opportunities to showcase the celebration of giving.

Weimar FFA has found multiple ways to embrace the holiday giving spirit. Creating floats for the community Christmas parade, caroling at local retirement homes, conducting toy and food drives, delivering food to members of their community – just to name a few.

Weimar FFA advisor Liz Treptow says, the large range of events hosted by the chapter ensures every member can participate.

“With so many opportunities to help, we will have 100% of our members participate in at least one of the events,” said Treptow. “It will be the dedicated ones, and we have a lot, that participate in all of them.”

Among the dedicated students participating is Makayla Kunz, Weimar FFA Vice President.

“Packaging food, helping children write letters to Santa, and caroling at local nursing homes, help instill qualities that I will carry with me for life,” said Kunz. “I have learned to take others’ feelings into consideration, care for those in need, and have gained important leadership capabilities.”

Molly Wick, Weimar FFA Treasurer, says Weimar FFA’s activities hold true to the FFA motto.

“As stated in our FFA motto, living to serve is a major part of the FFA,” said Wick. “To me, giving back to my community through service projects allows me to live out the last line [of the FFA motto] in my hometown.”

Learning the true meaning of service and continuing to aid others after graduation is one of Treptow’s goals in hosting these holiday events.

“It is our hope that we will instill a love for volunteerism in our members so that wherever they end up after high school, they will be willing to serve others,” said Treptow.

As of December 13, Weimar FFA has collected over $2,000 through their food bank drive. Every dollar can be used to purchase fourteen pounds of food at the local food bank. Therefore, Weimar FFA has raised enough money to purchase 28,000 pounds of food this holiday season.

In addition to food, Weimar FFA will distribute toys to approximately 80 children this holiday season.

“There is no better time than the holidays to give back to the community that has given us so much,” said Kunz.
