The Texas FFA Commodity Contest challenges chapters from across the state to select a Texas commodity they find important and promote it through an educational video and an interactive booth design. This initiative aims to strengthen agricultural literacy while fostering creativity and critical thinking among FFA members.

This year's winner, Karnes City FFA, brought a fun new perspective on one of Texas's most notable prickly plants, the prickly pear cactus. At their booth, members offered water and candies made from the prickly pear cactus, giving convention attendees the opportunity to sample the products firsthand.

“I didn't know how it was going to go at first when people would see our cactus candy and cactus sparkling water," said member Olivia Garza. "I thought maybe they would pass by, but people have tried it and loved it. I'm so happy it's been a success.”

The samples quickly became a conversation starter, encouraging members to stop by, ask questions, and discover a side of the prickly pear cactus that many had never considered before. By giving attendees a firsthand experience with the products, the chapter found a fun and memorable way to promote an important Texas commodity.

“I really think the members have enjoyed it," said Garza. "I’m so happy that they're giving it a chance, and I really hope they buy more cactus products in the future.”
