Zach Casas is being recognized for the 2026 Student Heroes Award for State Board of Education (SBOE) District 8 for his project he completed as a part of the Texas FFA Ford Leadership Scholar this year. Casas is one of 15 students to receive this award statewide for the acts of kindness, charity, and selfless service toward others displayed through his project.
Casas said that receiving the award is an incredibly humbling experience as it recognizes something that has always been bigger than himself. He is grateful to be able represent his chapter, community and the Texas FFA Association through this award.
“The Falcon Discovery Trails were created to provide Huffman ISD students and community members with a place to connect with nature, learn, and support their mental well-being,” Casas said. “This award reflects the impact that can happen when students, educators, community partners, and volunteers come together around a shared vision.”
Casas said that the lesson he learned from his project is that meaningful change happens through partnership and persistence.
“Transforming the overgrown pond at Falcon Ridge Elementary School into an outdoor learning space required bringing together many different people, overcoming obstacles, and staying focused on the long-term goal,” Casas said.
“As I move into a pursuit of medicine, I will carry that lesson with me,” Casas said. “Whether serving patients or leading a team, success comes from listening to others, working together, and remaining committed to making a positive impact.”
Moving forward, his goal for the project is for the Falcon Discovery Trails to continue growing as a resource for both education and wellness.
“I hope to expand the wildlife and educational components, increase community involvement, and ensure the project remains sustainable for future generations of students,” Casas said. “Ultimately, I want it to serve as a lasting reminder that outdoor spaces can inspire learning, strengthen communities, and positively impact mental health.”
Casas will be recognized for his award at the State Board of Education general meeting on June 26, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Austin, Texas.
