Canadian FFA Lends a Helping Hand

Canadian FFA members lent a helping hand to Stamford FFA after a barn fire left 15 students without show barrows. The Canadian FFA chapter presented Stamford ISD with $10,273 in donations at a playoff football game in Vernon, Texas in late November.
“We heard about the accident, and raised the money in two short days,” said Canadian FFA advisor, Tonny Hamby. “We couldn’t have done it without the community’s support.”
The generous donation was the result of community determination. The word got out through email, and a bucket was passed around during the football playoff game to add to the total collection.
“The afternoon we found out about the incident, our chapter officers were conducting a meeting to discuss our monthly agenda,” said Canadian FFA president, Marcee Cooke. “We began discussing the idea of a community-based fundraiser.”
Within 48 hours the fundraiser became noticed statewide. Chapters and individuals from all over Texas began contributing.
“Canadian FFA and their community went completely out of their way to help our kids,” said Stamford FFA advisor, Brad Bevel. “We never could have expected this much money to be donated.”
In addition to Canadian FFA’s support, several local pig breeders donated 11 replacement barrows, so students could meet state validation deadlines.
“That Friday night was one for the books,” said Cooke. “As a chapter we didn’t just get a good feeling to help another chapter in need, but we made lifelong friends and memories that night.”
