Why I Teach Ag: Larry Snowton

What ag education classes do you teach?
I teach Advanced Animal Science, Vet Med, Principles of Agriculture, Small Animal Management, and Equine Science.

Why do you teach ag?
I live a life I love with passion on several hundred acres I purchased over 26 years ago. After retiring from riding bulls professionally, I wanted to ranch and help other young students realize and go after their dreams and goals.  I try to teach them that it won't be easy, but nothing worthwhile comes easy. If you truly want success, it takes a lot of sweat equity, many late nights, and plenty of self-discipline.  I like to watch the light come on in students' lives and see their passion for pursuing their goals. It is awesome and very rewarding.

What is your favorite FFA memory?
Looking back at my personal FFA experience, my favorite memory would be being elected as a Collegiate FFA vice president. I will never forget my department head calling me into his office, letting me know that the student body had elected me and I was the first student of color to hold the role.

What advice would you give yourself as a first-year teacher?
Make time to get to know your students during the first week of school, let them know your expectations, and that you will be holding them accountable. I want them to hold me accountable as well.

Then share your story on how and why you decided to become an ag teacher. Share the process and then have each student share their stories as well. It will take time, but it makes a huge difference in the classroom.

Why do you believe that ag education is so important?
Because we give every student an opportunity to become a leader. I tell my students that I was uncomfortable every day when riding bulls professionally. But being uncomfortable is an essential ingredient of growth. If you are comfortable, you are not growing. We encourage them not to limit themselves.
